Moon rocks — nugs that have been covered in a sticky concentrate then rolled in kief — exist somewhat outside the current zeitgeist of weed culture. In a world where mindfulness and wellness trump the heady highs and bloodshot eyes of the pre-legalization era, moonrocks triumph as a relic of yesteryear, reminding you it can still be fun to be too high to do anything but belly laugh and lay around.
So, what are moon rocks exactly? Why would you want to smoke them? And, of course, how do you smoke them, you ask? Never fear. Weedmaps News is here to moonwalk you through the process, from countdown to blastoff.
Why smoke moon rocks?
Moon rocks are often used as a type of “stoner hack.” Typically clocking in at least 50% THC and costing upwards of $30 a gram, these coated nugs are all about bang for your buck. If you need to get extremely high, but don’t want to shell out the potentially hundreds of dollars it would take to buy the flower, concentrate, and kief separately, to the moon you go.
If cannabis consumption were a three-course meal, a microdose would be an appetizer, a fire pre-roll would be an entree, and moon rocks would be a McDonald’s hot fudge sundae you pick up on the way home from the restaurant: not necessarily the most gourmet product, but it gets the job done, and well.
Outside of wanting to get out-of-this-world high, moon rocks have a stellar application in the medicinal world, too. Since legality put a milligram cap on many cannabis products, for example, the 10 milligrams per serving cap imposed on edibles, patients requiring high doses of THC to cope with their ailments turn to moon rocks for relief.

Pros:
- They’re the one-stop-shop for getting as high as humanly possible.
- Easy and cost-effective: purchasing the three ingredients separately will set you back way more than buying a simple gram of moon rocks.
- Great for medicinal patients who require high THC dosage.
- Always a fun party favor and/or conversation piece.
Cons:
- They get you as high as humanly possible, which, in my experience, is not necessarily always great.
- You can only use glass to smoke moon rocks. Don’t roll them in a joint or blunt, and don’t put them in a grinder. It will make an incredible mess. Either put a small piece on a bowl of flower, or use a small piece as a standalone bowl.
- You can’t let moon rocks get too hot by leaving them in the sun or your car on a hot day. When they get too hot they can become a melty, gummy, sticky, mushy nightmare, never returning to their former planetary glory.
How to smoke moonrocks
What you’ll need:
- 1 gram of moon rocks
- 1 gram of flower
- 1 blade or straight razor
- 1 glass piece (pipe, bubbler, bong)
- 1 lighter
- 1 rolling tray
Step 1
Take one moon rock nug, place on the rolling tray. With your blade, cut the nug into four or five chunks.
Step 2
Take your glass piece and pack a normal bowl of flower.
Step 3
Put Moonrock chunk on top of the normal bowl of flower.
Step 4
Light your lighter, and begin burning the top of the moon rock slowly, so it sizzles and begins melting into the flower beneath it. If it catches on fire, blow it out.
Do not touch the moon rock. It will stick to you and burn you. Trust me, it sucks.
Step 5
Inhale as you apply low heat to the bowl until the entire thing is cherried.
Again, never touch the sticky little devil during this process, you will regret it.
Step 6
Exhale huge cloud. Coughing uncontrollably is optional.
Put Down the Grinder
Moon Rocks are not made to be ground up, either in your grinder or between your fingers. Grinding or crumbling your moon rocks means losing a bunch of that good concentrate and kief to the grinder’s teeth or melted onto your fingers. Instead of crumbling or grinding your moon rocks, the best method is to slice small sections off the rock, either using small scissors, a sharp knife, or a razor.
Also, consider using a piece with a smaller bowl as opposed to a larger one. As pleasant, tasty, and enticing as moon rocks are, you’re going to be doing the THC equivalent of drinking from a fire hose. A smaller-sized bowl will make sure you’re only smoking as much as you need. You’ll lose less to carbonization and can save the rest for later.
If you’re smoking your moon rocks in a bong, follow these same rules (to minimize oil loss, use an ice pinch slide). Be sure to clean and replace your bong water first. Again, if you’re smoking a high quality product, you might as well enjoy the full taste. Finally, it’s best to avoid smoking moon rocks out of a hand-held vaporizer, as the excess oil and resin can damage the components.
Add Moon Rocks onto Your Flower
Soaked with cannabis oil, sometimes it can be hard to get moon rocks to light. Slicing off a couple of pieces and placing them on top of some regular ground flower, whether in a joint, blunt, or a bowl is a good way to keep your fire lit while enjoying the full effects of moon rocks. Plus, you’ll save more of your products for next time. A second method is to create a “Landmine” by placing your moon rocks in between two ground up layers of bud. As far as smoking your moon rocks in a joint or a blunt, the best method is to break up the nug and add it into a base of weed (or tobacco if you’re into spliffs).
As already mentioned, moon rocks are pretty well saturated with cannabis oil, which can make them hard to light and harder to stay lit. Using the same techniques as you would for rolling a hash joint is a good way to keep them lit.
Partake in the Afternoon or Evening
Moon rocks are not the type of bud to consume when you’ve got anything else to do, especially not the first time. While it’s not a recommended product to consume for your regular wake and bake, moon rocks are great for your evening wind down. Put a movie on your screen or some music on your speakers and enjoy letting that couch cradle you all night.
Have Plenty of Water and Snacks On Hand
Once the full effects take hold, only the most motivated of cannabis consumer is going anywhere. This hat-trick of THC can also give you three times the cottonmouth as usual and no one wants to be both thirsty and couch locked. It’s also a good idea to drink a couple glasses of water before your first hit so you’re not starting at a thirst deficit, as well as keeping some more liquid near you. The same can go for your appetite, so be sure to have some snacks within easy reach once you put your bowl or your bong down.
So, now that you’re in the know about how to smoke moon rocks, grab some water, some scissors, and your favorite glassware and enjoy. Just don’t plan to do anything else for the day, especially if you’re new to consuming moon rocks!
Pick Up Your Pipe
Moon Rocks are best consumed either in a bong or a pipe. Be sure to pack your moon rocks loosely in the bowl. Tilt it away from the mouthpiece so there’s plenty of air flow. Since moon rocks are already saturated with oil and sticky with kief, your bowl can pretty easily clog with resin once you apply some flame. Expect more oil than normal to run down your piece.
From here, you may want to orbit the living room, alternating between contact with the fridge, the television and the couch for the foreseeable future. After a successful descent back into the atmosphere, repeat, if you dare.
Bought some non THC though high CBD moon rocks just to test. Not sure why so many people prefer high CBD over THC but honestly extremely high CBD when smoked does make you feel oddly focused. Though have not tried the stuff I just got in. Definitely more for high THC piney strains personally so far.
First time using moonrocks. I heard that a grinder ruins the keef/wax but i cant seem to get a fat rip out of the bong with a torch and hand-grinding? Anyone got some tips?
Just put it on a bed of bud, light the bud, and pull slowly. The moonrock needs to melt through some of the coating before the inner bud gets hot enough to pitch in, and until you have actual airflow in there you won’t get a ton of smoke. But that’s ok, because a fat rip is a huge waste. Bigger hits don’t do anything to get you more stoned. A small hit that’s easy to take is just as effective, and much more efficient.
Absolutely, stacking the moonrocks on top of some bud is the way to go.
Bigger hits absolutely get you more stoned, you must just waste all your smoke.
Nah, it’s been studied quite a bit. You aren’t absorbing more after the first few seconds, but you are temporarily reducing oxygen to your head, which tricks lots of people.
